Francis Lemont Dawson

Francis LeMont Dawson Francis LeMont Dawson was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After graduating from high school in 1933, he enrolled in Acadia University in Wolfville. He graduated in 1938 with B.A. Degree. In 1940 he earned a B.D. Degree and was ordained in the Canadian Baptist Convention. He served 4 small country churches before moving to Chester, Pennsylvania and completing post graduate work at Crozer Theological Seminary in 1943-44. He was then employed by the American Baptist Church and served in Magna and Moab, Utah. In 1952, he was transferred to a community church in Osburn, Idaho. In 1956 he began as minister of the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Anacortes, the Guemes Island and Summit Park Churches until 1964. Frank then turned away from traditional Christianity and worked various jobs including door-to-door sales, lawn service, delivery truck driver, mortician assistant, and landscaper of the Skyline Marina in Anacortes while it was in its early development. He also officiated at hundreds of weddings with his business card: Weddings Are Us. He earned a second B.A. Degree, in Education, at Western Washington University in Bellingham in 1967. He taught high school English, Journalism and Debate in Sedro Woolley, and taught 1 year in Nova Scotia at the school from which he graduated. Back in Anacortes, he went to work in 1969 at the Anacortes Post Office, where he remained until retirement in 1978. Wherever he was, Frank became deeply involved in the community. He was active with various units of the American Cancer Society, Boy Scouts, the American Red Cross, Lions Club, and PTA. In the 1970’s he began writing poetry, and published 16 collections of his work. In the 1980’s, he became a regular contributor of letters to the editors of several area newspapers. He was sometimes involved in spirited controversies because of his liberal political and religious views. He became a Unitarian Universalist and was active in the Skagit Fellowship as President and Secretary. In 1986 he moved to Bellingham and joined the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship where he was on the membership committee and Librarian. Mr. Dawson married Dorothy Burgher in 1940 and she preceded him in death in 1965. He married Annabelle Emley of Bellingham in 1967 and she preceded him in death in 1992. Two brothers preceded him in death. Frank has two surviving sisters, Hope Harrison and Dorothy Fletcher in Nova Scotia. He is also survived by 4 sons and daughters-in-law: Harry (Judy) of LaConner/Anacortes, David (Barbara) of Renton, Darrell (Myra) of Oak Harbor, and Dwight (Candace) of Houston, Texas, as well as 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A Memorial and Celebration Service will be held at the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, 1708 I St., Bellingham, WA 98225, beginning at 4:00 pm on Monday, December 10, 2007. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Frank to The American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society.
