George Douglas Black SPRINGHILL - It is with heart felt sadness that the family announce the death of George Douglas Black, age 60, of Springhill, N.S., on Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Donald and Frances (Barnett) Black. George dedicated his life to the Amherst Fire Department, where he provided faithful service for 25 years, as a full time and volunteer firefighter. He was captain of Rescue Truck No. 5, where he was highly respected by the members of that company. George served as Sergeant with 1st Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders. In his younger years George played hockey, boxing and participating with CB buddies. He was an avid hunter, fisher and enjoyed his camp. George was a former member of the Tantramar Dog Club, where he trained his own Labrador Retrievers. He is survived by his loving wife of nine years, the former Heather Spence; son, David (Faith) of Amherst; daughter, Sandra (Derek) Ripley of Fenwick; step son, Tim (Kathy Gardiner) White of Bedford N.S.; brothers, Jack (Rose) of Westville, N.S., Carl (Carolyn) of Springhill, Henry (Bonnie) of Lower Sackville, N.S., Rod (May) and Robin (Bev) both of Amherst; sisters, Patsy (Robert) Fuller and Cathy (Terry) Clark both of Amherst, Lorna (Bruce) Jones of Fort Lawrence, Cindy (Kevin) McNeil of Charlottetown, P.E.I.; half brother, Victor of N.S.; seven grandchildren, one step grandson, many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by brothers David and Gordon. His remains are resting in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906) with visiting on Tuesday, Nov. 27. 2007 from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at 2 p.m. from Campbell’s Chapel with Rev. John Tonks officiating. Interment will take place in the Amherst Cemetery, followed by a reception in the fire hall. Donations in George’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit, All Saints Hospital, L.A. Animal Shelter or the charity of your choice. www.campbells-amherst.ca
