Agnes Regina Mac Donald

Date de naissance : 29 juin 1921

Date de décès : 20 novembre 2007

Agnes Regina Mac Donald AMHERST - Agnes Regina Mac Donald, 86, recently of Amherst, N.S., passed away Nov. 20th, 2007, at the Cumberland Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia on June 29, 1921, she was the daughter of immigrants, John and Maria Aubrecht. She was one of 11 children only two of whom are still living - Anne Albrecht of Montréal and Jenny Legatto of Sydney Mines. Her nephew, a favourite of hers, Rudy Aubrecht, raised by her parents, also survives her as do numerous other nieces and nephews. As a child Agnes was driven to succeed in school so that she might find employment that would permit her to become self supporting. She entered nursing school and received her R.N. on September 13, 1946. She loved her work and earned the nickname “ Easy “ because she was so pleasant to work with. In 1950 she married Malcolm Mac Donald and moved with him to a tiny cabin in Broughton, Cape Breton, where he was employed as a mechanic and jack-of-all- trades at the 4-Star coal mine. Their only child, Beryl Ann Mac Donald was born in 1951. While Beryl was young, Agnes did not work but she did become involved in many organizations including the Home and School Association which she considered to be most important because of her interest in and support for public education. Agnes returned to her beloved nursing profession later in life and continued nursing until Malcolm’s deteriorating health required her full attention. After Malcolm’s death, Agnes had the opportunity to travel in Canada, the United States and Europe. Because of a childhood leg injury she was not able to participate in many sports activities but she loved swimming and in her 60s she discovered bowling. She was an avid bowler into her late 70s. Agnes is also survived by her daughter Beryl, son-in-law David H. Christie, and grandchildren “Alex” Christie and Maeghan Christie. Following her wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Cremation has taken place. Donations in her memory may be made to the Cumberland Regional Hospital or a charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be made through: www.campbells-amherst.ca
