BURNS, PATRICK J. - The death of Patrick J. Burns of Fredericton occurred, January 30th, 2005 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. He was the son of John Burns and Veronica (O'Leary), born on January 7, 1913, at Saint John, New Brunswick where he received his education attending local elementary schools, St. Vincent Boys High School and Saint John Vocational. Upon graduation, he entered the employ of the Canadian Press, the Evening Times Globe and the Telegraph Journal. In the mid 1930's, he entered the field of transportation with SMT serving in successive management capacities in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. With the advent of Acadian Coach Lines, the successor of SMT in Nova Scotia, he was appointed to a management position and served in Truro where he met his wife, Edna Purdy. In 1940, he was appointed General Manager of Golden Arrow Coach Lines operating in St. John's, Newfoundland, a position he held for several years. Upon his return to Canada, he joined the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission and was charged with organizing its transportation department and served as Superintendent of Transportation for several years until he was appointed as the Commission's Corporate Secretary in 1960, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. While living in Saint John, he served in executive positions in various sports activities, especially baseball, including the positions of Secretary and Director of the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League. This interest in baseball followed him on his move to Fredericton in that he was one of the founding members of the Fredericton Little League and served as its President for several years. In addition to his sporting interests, he served in various positions in the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Saint John and the Maritimes. As a resident of Fredericton, he was active in Church related organizations having served as President of St. Dunstan's Holy Name Society, Chairman of the Organizing Committee leading to the development and construction of the Monsignor Boyd Family Center. He was also active in the development and construction of the new St. Dunstan's Church. He was one of the organizers and Charter members of St. Dunstan's Credit Union (later to become York Credit Union) and served on its executive for a number of years. He was active in charitable organizations and served on the executive of York Manor, York Properties Inc. and York County Development Inc. He was also President and served on the Executive Board of Provincial Artisans (Fredericton) Ltd. for many years. He was a member of the 25 year club of NB Power, a life member of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators of Canada and a member of the Fredericton Rotary Club. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years Edna (Purdy); his son Kevin P. (Wendy) of Fredericton; sisters Nina Poirier of Saint John, Jean VanOudenal of Vancouver and Anne Y. Burns of Ottawa; and brothers Joseph (Eleanor/Eileen) of Moncton, Frank (May) of Saint John and Maurice (Billie) of Saint John. He is survived by one son, Richard P. (Susan) of Fredericton; granddaughters Carrie, Sara and Jane, all of Fredericton; a sister Gertrude (Albert Hanley) of Saint John and several nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation by family request. The funeral mass will be held at St. Dunstan's Church, Fredericton on Tuesday, February 1st, 2005 at 12 Noon. Msgr. Brian Sheehan will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date in the Hermitage Cemetery. No flowers by request; for those who wish memorial tributes made to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
