MELICK, MARILYN LOUISE - 67, River John, Pictou Co. passed away on March 18th, 2005 in the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital surrounded by friends after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Marilyn was born in Saint John, N.B. on February 12, 1938. Graduating from Saint John High School in 1956 she attended Mount Allison University attaining her Bachelor of Arts in 1960. Employed briefly with Shaw Bricks she entered the Ontario College of Education training in Special Education in Toronto receiving her B.Ed.. Marilyn then taught commercial in Saint Catharines and Toronto schools for a decade. Upon returning to Nova Scotia she continued her teaching in Windsor and subsequently at Cole Harbour for 13 years. Attending Dalhousie and Saint Mary's Universities part time she received her Masters of Education Degree. Shortly after early retirement in 1993 she moved to her dream home in River John where she became the loved and respected friend of the community. Marilyn was predeceased by her parents James A. (1993) and Nita (Edgar) (2000) and her brother James (1970). She is survived by her uncle Peter Stanger, aunt Beryl Spencer, cousins David and Ann Swan and numerous nephews and nieces. Marilyn loved and was loved by her two miniature Schnauzers, Trixie and Buttons. Marilyn was always a gentle, generous soul, with her love, her sense of humor and her worldly possessions. In her later years she became an enthusiastic gardener and was never happier than when puttering in her vegetable or flower garden. Marilyn will be sorely missed by her longstanding friend Judy Langille and her husband Rollie and The Orange Street Gang of girls that have remained close since childhood and her many friends and relations. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Services will be held at Saint John the Baptist Anglican Church in River John on Monday, March 21st at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Amanda Longmoor is officiating. Interment will occur at a later date in Saint Paul's Cemetery, Hampton N.B. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the S.P.C.A., River John Library or charity of choice.
