AMHERST – It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. J. Alden McCully, 76, of Amherst, announce his passing on Sept. 18, 2008. Born in Stellarton, he was the son of the late Lester and Annie McCully (nee Young). In his earlier years, he attended Dalhousie University and graduated as an MD in 1960. He worked his way through university as a Fuller Brush salesman, and playing piano with the Easternaires. At the prompting of the late George Saunders, he set up practice in Amherst on Victoria St. He practised medicine for more than 30 years as a general practitioner and delivered numerous babies as one of the chief obstetricians in Amherst. Once retired, he enjoyed trips to the U.S., Scotland and numerous other locations. He enjoyed genealogy, family gatherings, walking, skating, cottage life, and playing music with the Cumberland Clan. He was well known as a great follower of the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He loved people. He was a loving and devoted husband of 50 years to his wife Shirley (MacIntosh), and a beloved father to daughters Lynn (Bill) O’Connor, Lori (Glenn) Tozer and proud grandfather of Ryan O’Connor. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Hines. The remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (667-8777). A funeral service will be held in the Trinity St. Stephens United Church in Amherst, on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m., with a reception to follow. Burial will follow in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens, Alma, Pictou Co., on Monday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. There will be no visitation. www.furlongjones.ca
