HUGHES, RALPH JESSE - Of Algonquin Place, passed away peacefully at the SJRH on October 1, 2005. He was born in Saint John and spent the latter part of his life on West side. He was the husband of the late Velma (Kincade Luck) Hughes and son of the late Arthur and Jessie (Riach) Hughes. He is survived by on step-son son, Dennis (Judianne) Luck, two sisters; Betty Garland of Ottawa, and Bernice Duerr of USA, four grandchildren; Michelle, Sean, Kristian and Matthew, and three great-grand children, Sara, Daniel and Gabrielle. He is also survived by one sister-in-law, Julie Hughes as well as many nieces and nephews. He will be especially missed by niece, Jillian and nephew Ian. He is pre-deceased by his brother, Arthur Hughes. Ralph grew up in Saint John and upon graduating from Saint John Vocational School he left to serve in WWII from 1941-1945. During his years of overseas service he was employed with the RAF and RCAF as a commando and radio operator. After the war he resumed his studies at UNB and completed his Economics degree at Mount Allison University. Ralph spent many years employed with a large American Construction Company as an accountant and paymaster. This employer provided Ralph many opportunities for travel, having him stationed in Western Canada, Labrador, and Vietnam in 1957. There he was engaged in military construction projects for the US Army and Navy. Returning to Canada in 1969, he assumed employment with the Province of New Brunswick where he worked as an accountant at the Lepreau Nuclear Station until his retirement. Ralph was a quiet gentleman, demure and charming, however; he was outgoing and active throughout his life. A sports enthusiast, Ralph excelled at hockey, basketball, track, bowling, curling, shuffleboard, boxing, fishing and hunting and he was an accomplished marksman. He holds many trophies and medals for his accomplishments. A life well lived, many stories shared, he will be fondly remembered by his friends and family. Resting at A.W. Cavanagh Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 91 Leinster Street (634-1712) with visiting on Tuesday, October 4 from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. A tribute to a Veteran Service will take place at 7pm. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11am in Cavanagh's Chapel followed by internment in Fernhill Cemetery. Donations to the NB Red Cross would be appreciated by the family.
