MURRAY, ROBERTA G. - Roberta Gladys Murray, 83, of Salisbury passed away peacefully in the Moncton Hospital on Monday January 16, 2006 surrounded by her loving children. She is survived by her daughter Jo Anne of Saint John; her sons Austin (Carole) of Red Deer, James (Sharon) of Fredericton, Brian (Kathy) of Salisbury, and Dale of Moncton, son in law Paul St. Pierre of Ontario and twenty-nine grandchildren and great grandchildren. The fourth of the nine children of the late Joseph and Gladys Steeves of Lower Coverdale, she is also survived by her sisters Lowell Gourley, Vivian Stainforth, and Gwennie Atkinson; and her brothers Rudyard, Charles and Joseph. She was predeceased by her husband Rev. Stuart Eldon Murray, a son Robert, daughter Marilyn St. Pierre, brothers Bud and Gerald. After attending Moncton High School, and a brief period of work at Eatons, Roberta married Stuart Murray in 1942. She supported her husband's work in Baptist pastorates in Wolfville, Oromocto, Hartland, Halifax, Pennsylvania, USA, and Five Points; and was active in working with the students at UBBTS and ABC, where her husband served as Principal and then President. Over the years she taught Sunday School, led CGIT, was involved in various Women's Missionary Societies, and helped lead camps at Shiktehawk, Wildwood and Tulakadik. She participated actively in local PTA groups as her children went through school, worked with her husband in the Conservative Party in Albert County, and served a term on the Board of the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. In 1999, in recognition for her continuing efforts on behalf of students and staff at the Atlantic Baptist University, she was awarded the Atlantic Baptist University Leadership Award. An active member of the Salisbury Baptist Church, Roberta was a committed member of the Myrtle Bannister Women's Missionary Society and the Auxiliary of the Atlantic Baptist University. An avid sports fan, she followed the Blue Jays with enthusiasm, and enjoyed watching curling and bowling. She was an outstanding bowler, and enjoyed her walks on the golf course. Roberta was well known for the colourful quilts she displayed at regional craft sales, and her family continues to wear the many sweaters, mittens and socks which she lovingly knit for them. Resting at the Salisbury Funeral Home, 3350 Salisbury Road (372-4800) with visiting Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral will be held Thursday January 19 at 2 p.m. from the Salisbury Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Interment will be at the Wilmot Cemetery. Memorials to the Atlantic Baptist University in support of the Stuart and Roberta Murray Scholarship would be appreciated by the family. www.keirsteads.ca
