ROY CLAYTON ERNST
ERNST, ROY CLAYTON - 1918-2006 Roy Clayton Ernst of Moncton, passed away on March 15, 2006 at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont Hospital, Moncton. Born in Indian Point, Lunenburg County, NS, on November 24, 1918, he was the son of William G. and Ella A. (Heisler) Ernst. He served as an R.C.A.F. Flying Officer during World War II, and joined the Ministry of Transport, Moncton, in 1946, as an Air Traffic Controller. He was promoted to Chief of Moncton ACC in 1957 and to Manager, Atlantic Region Air Traffic Control, in 1962. In 1967, he was awarded the Canada Centennial Medal in recognition of his service to the nation. He retired in 1974, after 29 years of service. Roy was an avid golfer and curler for many years, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Through his work and sporting associations, he built relationships with many people throughout the Atlantic Provinces. Roy was a strong competitor, but to many more, he was a friend. He had a lifetime of marvelous stories, which he freely shared. He was a member of the Moncton Golf and Country Club, the Beaver Curling Club, the Moncton Probus Club and the Federal Service National Association. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Mary Elizabeth (Wilson) Ernst; brother Frank of Lunenburg, NS; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Barbara and Robert Cross of Tillsonburg, ON; nephews Warren Zwicker of Indian Point, NS, Ronald Ernst of Lunenburg, NS, and Gordon Cross of Tillsonburg, ON; nieces Mary McLeod of Alymer, ON and Mary Tietjen of Port Townsend, WA, U.S.A.; and numerous special cousins who are descendents of the late Ruth (Lutes) Deware, the late Florence Cregan, the late Carmen Whittington, and the late Walter McLean. He was predeceased by his sister Mary and brother Clarence. A funeral service and reception were held Sunday, March 19 at Fair Haven Funeral Home. Interment in Fairhaven Memorial Gardens. Donations in Roy's memory to The Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation and The Dr. G.L. Dumont Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
