
STANLEY MORRELL CARNAGHAN
CARNAGHAN, STANLEY MORRELL - 97, passed away quietly on March 27th, 2006 at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Saint John, NB. Born in Shanghai, China in 1909, he was a son of the late John G. and Lillian R. Carnaghan. Stanley was predeceased by a sister, Kitty; three brothers; Thedore, John, and Douglas; his first wife Margaret (Clayton), and second wife Audrey (Cobourne). He is survived by a son John, of Bedford N.S. and three grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews residing in the United Kingdom. He served in Italy, with the Canadian Forestry Corps. during the Second World War. Stanley lived a colorful life. At age one, he accompanied his mother and a brother from China by ship to Vladivostok, Russia, continuing their journey on the first ever Trans Siberian Railway passenger train to run west to Moscow. Immigrating to Canada in 1928, he operated a Trading Post for the Hudson's Bay Co. in Upper Hay River, Alberta, later becoming co-owner of a successful oil exploration company in Turner Valley, Alberta. When the Alberta oil industry was finally nationalized by Social Credit Government, he travelled to Vancouver and later Toronto, where he was employed in the general insurance industry in both cities. He was subsequently persuaded to relocate to Saint John by the late K.C. Irving, who hired him as the first Superintendent of Irving Oil Limited. Stanley was prominent in the Saint John general insurance industry, having founded Carnaghan Insurance Ltd. He also operated a number of insurance and real estate enterprises in Halifax, N.S.
