The death of Gerald Welsh Long, 80, of Sackville, occurred suddenly at his home on Monday, April 21. Born in Middle Sackville, he was a son of the late James and Rebecca (Estabrooks) Long. A skilled carpenter for most of his life, Gerald built many homes in the Sackville area. He was the first district governor from the Sackville Lions Club for the district of 41N1. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and most sports, including hockey and car racing. Gerald will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Edith (nee Govang); three sons, David (Peggy), Bill (Diane), Bob (Claudette); two daughters, Gail (Sidney) Baker, and Jane (David) Slipp, all of Sackville; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. His remains were entrusted to the Jones Funeral Home in Sackville, where visitation and a Lions’ memorial service took place on Thursday, April 24. The funeral service was held at the funeral home on Friday, April 25, with Pastor Morris Mills officiating. Burial was in the Sackville Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.
