WANDA ISABEL (SWIFT) TOUCHIE

TOUCHIE, WANDA ISABEL (SWIFT) - The death of Wanda Isabel (Swift) Touchie occurred on March 30, 2006 in hospital in Fredericton, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born December 24, 1942, Wanda grew up in Moncton and graduated from Moncton High School as well as the New Brunswick Teacher's College in 1963. Wanda was a gifted teacher, having taught in a one-room schoolhouse outside of Moncton as well as the Halifax Academy. She was a life-long learner and felt that reading and education were the keys to success in her life. During the early years of her marriage and motherhood, Wanda and her young family lived in Halifax, Saint John, and Vancouver before settling in Fredericton, NB in 1973. Over the years, Wanda devoted herself entirely to her five children and husband and all of their busy lives. She attended countless horse shows, ski trips, hockey games, plays and piano recitals to encourage and support her children in her own quiet, graceful way. She treasured the long, warm summers at the cottage and log cabin on Grand Lake with her wonderful family and friends. Wanda was a lifelong member of the Anglican Church, which sustained her from childhood and for a lifetime. Wanda gave her time through volunteering as one of the original board members of the Extra Mural Hospital, as the District Commissioner of the Fredericton Pony Club for several years, at many innovative programs at Garden Creek School and working with young children through the Headstart Program. Though reading was her greatest passion, Wanda loved gardening, golfing, taking trips with her husband and children, including unforgettable golf trips to Bermuda. Rarely an evening went by that Wanda didn't have family or friends over for a lovely home-cooked meal. Her kindness and generosity were legendary and felt by all who knew her. But by far, the most important part of her life was spending cherished time with her children and grandchildren. Wanda lived a gentle, dedicated life and her legacy will be her remarkable teachings of love, tolerance, faith, loyalty and a joy for life that is reflected in her family and in the memory of her grace. Wanda will be sadly missed by her best friend and husband of 42 years, Harold; her children Jane (Andrew Miller), Jeff, Heather (Dominic Blakely), Sarah (Steven Christie), and Megan, as well as her beloved grandchildren: Lucy, Eleanor and Isaac Miller, Molly and Annie Touchie, Michael and Caroline Blakely, Georgia and Ruth Christie. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their families, as well as a special extended family of life long friends. Wanda is predeceased by her father, Donald, her brother, Donald Jr., and her beloved sister, Ingrid (Young) Peterson. A memorial service will be held at the Christ Church Cathedral at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 2 to celebrate Wanda's remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Fredericton Public Library or to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated by the family. McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. www.mcadamsfh.com
