FRANK MARTIN MacMILLAN

MacMILLAN, FRANK MARTIN - On May 17, 2006, Frank MacMillan of Halifax passed away peacefully at the QEII Hospital. Born in Wood Islands, PEI in 1918, he was the son of the late Neil Peter and Marion Julia (Emery) MacMillan. Frank is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie of 49 years, three children, Heather (Brian) Craig of Rothesay, NB; Neil (Marilyn) MacMillan of Halifax and Ian MacMillan of Halifax, four grandchildren, Robyn & Michael Craig, Presley & Stephen MacMillan; one brother, Daniel Hector (Yvonne) MacMillan of Wood Islands and two nephews and a niece. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary (Ray) MacPherson and Sarah (Keith) Forsythe. Frank led a full and adventurous life. He was in the Merchant Marine and the RCAF during WWII. Frank gained national recognition in Oct. 1954 when he piloted a mercy flight in a T-33 Silver Star from Portage LaPrairie to Halifax (approx. 1500 miles) in 2 hours and 44 minutes, breaking the previous record by 26 minutes. He was Officer Commanding Flight Training at 3(F) Wing in Zweibrucken, Germany as a combat ready member of 413 Fighter Squadron. Upon retiring from the RCAF, Frank returned to Wood Islands and developed what is now known as North-umberland Provincial Park. He then joined the Department of Fisheries and oversaw the building of many fish hatcheries in the Maritimes. He retired in 1978 with 25 years in the Public Service of Canada. On his retirement he and Bonnie spent many happy winters traveling. Frank was the founding President of the Clan MacMillan PEI Chapter and devoted many years researching his family history. He was invested in the Community of the Tonsured Servant by Chief George G. MacMillan, Chief of the Clan MacMillan of Scotland for his efforts in August 2001. Frank was a man of many interests. He particularly loved music, writing lyrics and poetry and being surrounded by family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Frank's family would like to thank the staff of Geriatrics at 9 Lane for their assistance and care in the past few months. There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax. A Memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 2 pm at the Wood Islands Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Franks memory to a charity of the donor's choice.
