McCARTHY, ESTHER L. - The death of Esther L. McCarthy, formally of Hillcrest Village, Saint John, NB, wife of the late Thomas McCarthy, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Wednesday, April 18th, 2007. Born in Saint John on April 4th, 1920, she was a daughter of the late John and Lena (Levine) Rathje. She was a member of the St. Augustine Westfield CWL and the Jaycettes. Esther enjoyed bowling, bingo, but most of all her grandchildren and their many accomplishments. Survived by her sons, Thomas (Debbie) of Gananoque, ON, Timothy of Hamilton, ON and John (Cyndi) of Landsdowne, ON; her daughters, Esther Ann Gregory (John) of Dartmouth, NS, Janice Cochrane of Browns Flat, NB, Gail Short (James) and Christina Purdy both of Saint John, Sarah Jane Wishart (Don) of Bedford, NS, Colleen Schofield (Fred) of Ajax, ON; thirty-six grandchildren; thirty-nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, John and Harry; her sister, Greta Craft; and her son-in-law, Lloyd Cochrane. Resting at Brenan's Bay View Select Community Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John (506-634-7425) with visiting on Friday, April 20th, 2007 from 2 to 9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustine's Church, Grand Bay-Westfield on Saturday, April 21st, 2007 at 11:00am. Interment will take place in St. Augustine's Cemetery at a later date.
