MARY ELIZABETH CUMMINGS

CUMMINGS, MARY ELIZABETH - January 15, 1920 - August 11, 2007 Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Cummings died peacefully on August 11, 2007. She resided in Houlton, Maine for the past four years after living most of her life in Chicago. Born on January 15, 1920 at Madigan Hospital, Houlton, she was the eldest child of James and Louise (Guest) Cummings of Killoween, New Brunswick. She spent her childhood years on the family farm and attended local schools there. After the death of her mother in 1937, she worked in Augusta, Maine and studied paediatric nursing there. She later joined the U.S. Air Force and with her nursing training, assisted soldiers returning from WW II with respiratory treatments. She then studied clerical and office management and for many years was employed as a private secretary for Kirkland and Ellis Law Firm of Chicago. Betty is survived by her youngest brother, Gerald, of Fredericton and formerly of Woodstock, NB; a dear brother-in-law, Joe Toner, Grand Falls, NB; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and friends in the Chicago area. She is predeceased by her siblings: Marie, Margaret (Keenan), Gertrude, (SCIC), Kathleen (Toner), Harold and Francis (Frank). Betty loved nature and cherished all creatures great and small, particularly her birds. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Dan Melanson at Saint John the Evangelist Church, Johnville, NB at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. Burial will be in the family plot in Johnville. NB. All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, And all things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.
