MARY - 1926-2007 MITCHELL
MITCHELL, MARY - 1926-2007 - On August 29, 2007, Mary Jones (Fleetwood) Mitchell passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Mary had battled complications from a severe stroke over a three-year period prior to her death. Mary was born in Leeds, England on July 16th, 1926 and is predeceased by her parents Clarence and Mabel Fleetwood and her brother Geoffrey Fleetwood also from England. Mary is also predeceased by her husband John "Bert" Mitchell (March 28, 1928 - November 26, 2005) Mary and Bert were a devoted couple of 52 years. Mary was the most beautiful and loving mother and dear friend to her two daughters, Margaret Henderson and Judith Mackin. Mary also adored both her sons-in-law, Russell Henderson and Peter Smit. Mary was a special "Nana" to her four grandchildren Mitchell Henderson, Lauren Henderson, Robyn Mackin and Danika Smit to whom she loved deeply. Mary also leaves behind a very special friendship with Lawrence and June Waller, from Hull, England. Upon leaving England, shortly after her marriage to Bert in 1953, Bert and Mary traveled to Kenya to be missionaries. After eight years in Africa they traveled to Rothesay, New Brunswick where Mary (along with Bert) took up teaching positions. Mary opened a Nursery School in her home on College Hill and, for many years following, taught Kindergarten at Rothesay Baptist Christian School. Mary was rarely seen without a flock of children at her feet; their mutual love for one another was always evident. Mary loved the outdoors, long walks, and especially horseback riding. Along with Bert, Mary worked tirelessly with both the Rothesay Baptist Church and the Kennebecasis United Baptist Church. After Mary's retirement, both she and Bert spent a lot of time with the St. John's (Stone) Community Chaplaincy providing hot meals to ex-convicts and showing love to the poor and needy. The funeral for our Mary will be held on Sunday, September 2nd, 2007 at 2:00 pm at Kennebecasis United Baptist Church. We invite friends and loved ones for a one day visitation at Castle Funeral Home, Kings Chapel, Rothesay (154 Hampton Road 849 1702) on Saturday, September 1st 2007: 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate offerings to be made to the 'Child Evangelism Fellowship' (http://www.cefonline.com). Mary's family recognizes the tremendous care and support that was given to her over the past three years at the Saint John Regional Hospital on 3C South and also the year she spent in St. Joseph's Hospital on the 7th floor. Mary spent her final days at the Turnbull Nursing Home where she was treated with tremendous love, respect and dignity. The staff's care and compassion made Mary's illness more bearable. A special thank you to Fran Pugsley for being our special friend and nurse and to all our other friends who shared a special bond with our family. Mary Mitchell's life of quiet service and selflessness was an example of what a Christian life could be. All who met Mary, loved Mary -- a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and most of all, our very dearest friend.
