EVELYN LAURA (GORDON) GRANT
GRANT, EVELYN LAURA (GORDON) - It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Evelyn, daughter of the late Havelock and Lena (Reed) Gordon, was born in Mactaquac, NB on January 2, 1913. She passed away peacefully at Pine Grove Nursing Home in Fredericton on Sunday, September 9, 2007. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Gordon Grant and her brother, Douglas Gordon. Evelyn was a graduate of Keswick Ridge School; at the age of 20, UNB. Prior to her 1939 marriage to Gordon Grant, she completed a six year teaching career; three years at Springhill, two years at Keswick Ridge and one year at Lakeville, NB. In later years, she served as Secretary to the New Brunswick Fruit Growers Assn and Bookkeeper for Clear Bright Farms. Always interested in the affairs of her community, Evelyn was a member of Keswick Ridge United Church where she was an active participant in UCW. Additionally she was a Life Member of the Keswick Ridge Women's Institute and a member of the Ridgeview Seniors. In 1984 The Keswick Ridge Recreation Council, in recognition of her contributions to community life, named her as their Citizen of the Year. Beyond community and family life, her interests were many and varied. Evelyn was an accomplished organist, pianist, genealogist and bird watcher. Additionally she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, history and writing. She combined her history and writing interests by co authoring, with her brother in law, Harry Grant, two books, On the Ridge, a history of Keswick Ridge and The Vanished Village, a history of Jewett's Mills. In 1998 her memoirs, The Wind at My Back, were completed. She is survived by a son, Richard (Dorene) of Havre de Grace, MD and daughter, Margaret Childers of Vero Beach, FL. Also surviving are grandchildren, Daniel Grant (Pauline) of Vernon Hills, IL, Christine Wincovitch (Joseph) of Middletown, PA, Karen Longinetti of Queens, NY and David Longinetti (Marcia) of Manahawkin, NJ. Surviving great grandchildren are Elliot, Sela and Anna Grant, Abigail, Emma and Joseph Wincovitch, Jr. and Rebecca Longinetti. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Thursday, September 13, 2007 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will take place at the Keswick Ridge United Church on Friday, September 14, 2007 at 2 pm with Rev. Dr. Amos Adeniyi officiating. Interment will take place in Pickard Merrithew Cemetery, Keswick, NB. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Keswick Ridge United Church.
