ANNA A. CHRISTIE
CHRISTIE, ANNA A. - Born in 1916 in Gairloch, N.S., the eldest daughter of Rev. Dr. George A. Christie and his wife Rae (Mowatt) Christie. Having attended school in N.B. and P.E.I., she obtained a teacher's licence from Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. She taught school for one year, then began a career in nursing, starting at Montreal General Hospital. After obtaining a diploma in teaching and supervision from McGill University, she taught at the School of Nursing at Montreal General until 1949. She used her nursing and teaching qualifications to work internationally over the next four years, first in New Zealand, then Australia, South Africa and England. In 1953 she returned to McGill University for a Bachelor of Nursing degree, and was then appointed as Educational Director at the School of Nursing. In 1962 Anna moved to Fredericton to work for the N.B. Association of Registered Nurses as Educational Consultant for Schools of Nursing in the province, retiring in 1975. Anna drove for Meals on Wheels, and in 1962 became a founding volunteer at Fredericton's Community Kitchen. A member of St. Paul's United Church, she was also involved in the United Church Women. In 1994, she received a Canada Volunteer Award and Certificate of Honour from the federal Minister of Health in Ottawa. She was a member of Project Ploughshares and, because of these and other activities promoting peace and international understanding, was honoured with the YMCA Peace Medal in 2004. Anna is survived by brother, Rev. Howard Christie of Cobourg, Ontario; nephews, Ted Boothroyd and Dr. Robert Christie, both of Fredericton; and 11 other nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Boothroyd and brother, Clarence. The family offers special thanks to Dr. S. Karol, the nurses of the Extra-Mural Program, and especially to Judy O'Donnell and staff of Farraline Place for their wonderful care in the past months. Visitation will be held at McAdams Funeral Home in Fredericton on Wednesday, Dec. 19, from 7 to 9 pm, and Thursday, Dec. 20 from 2 to 4 pm. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's United Church at 2 pm on Friday, Dec. 21. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Farraline Place, the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada, or a charity supporting world peace would be welcome. www.mcadamsfh.com
