THOMAS CONWAY

CONWAY, THOMAS - 93, died on December 22nd, 2007, in Dartmouth. Tom was the last survivor of eight children born in Wallsend, England to John and Annie Conway. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Emelyn (McGrath), and son-in-law, Ray Hamilton. Tom is survived by his children, Annie (Louis Baslaw), Portland, Oregan; Cathy Hamilton, Dartmouth; John (Josée Durocher), Montreal; Joe (Cathy MacNeil), Toronto, along with three granddaughters and seven grandsons. During the Second World War, Tom traveled the world as a physical education instructor in the RAF. While stationed in Charlottetown, he met Emelyn and they married in Wallsend in 1946. Tom taught for over 25 years in Newcastle and Saint John, NB. Tom's community activities centered around helping others, from youth in Royal Canadian Air Cadets to seniors with Meals on Wheels, driving and home visits, other activities included the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul, Red Cross and Retired Teachers of New Brunswick. Fitness was always a part of Tom's life. After he retired, he learned to swim and was well-known for daily long walks along the Saint John Golden Mile. Tom and Emelyn moved to Dartmouth in 1996. Until last year, he attended daily mass. After mass, Tom and Clary Mullane were regulars at the Cole Harbour Tim Horton's, where he knew everyone's name. The family wants to thank Dr. Peter McAuley for his diligence and great kindness. In lieu of flowers, please give donations to the Metro Food Bank. Visitation in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St, Dartmouth, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral mass to be held in St. Clement's Church, 16 Gaston Road, Dartmouth, on December 24th at 9 am.
