GILBERT L. IRVINE
IRVINE, GILBERT L. - Gilbert L. Irvine, of Saint John, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Ridgewood Veterans' Unit on June 28, 2008. Gil was born January 23, 1921 to the late Grace M and Joseph Irvine of West Saint John. He is survived by his wife and dancing partner of 58 years, Audrey Irvine; sister, Katherine Shearer, Woodstock, NB; son, Ian Irvine (Kari), Nerepis; daughters, Janice Irvine-Meek (Gary Meek), Moncton; Lois Nickerson (Frank), Saint John; Katherine Swift (Edwin), Fredericton; and several nieces and nephews. Gil was devoted to his family and particularly delighted in sharing in the experiences of his six grandchildren: Andrew Meek (Perth-Andover); Nicholas Nickerson (Saint John); Katelyn Nickerson (Ottawa); Hilary Meek (Moncton); Laura Nickerson (Yellowknife); Ainsley Swift (Fredericton). A graduate of Saint John Vocational School and Saint John Business College, Gil was a talented artist whose works hold places of honour in the homes of his family. He was employed with the National Harbours Board. Gil served overseas in WWII as a Lieutenant Corporal in the North Shore Regiment and with the Reserve Army - 102 Manning Depot, rising to the rank of Captain. He was a Grand Master of Carleton Union Lodge #8, FMAM and Secretary for 17 yrs. Gil was also a member of the Scottish Rite, the Royal Order of Scotland and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 69. His varied interests included fishing, hunting, camping with family, and his workshop. Gil was a resident of the Ridgewood Veterans' Unit, where he particularly enjoyed the music program and played harmonica in the Ridgewood Jamboree group. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the staff and volunteers of the Ridgewood Veterans' Unit, Kim Smith and caregivers of Senior Watch, Denise Marley RN, Dr. S.J. Keyes, Dr S.A. Keyes, Sheri Trecartin and Parkinson's Society, Saint John Chapter and McCrea's Fish Farm. Resting at Castle Funeral Home, "Fallsview Chapel", 309 Lancaster Ave., (634-1701) visitation will take place on Monday, June 30, 2008 and Tuesday, July 01, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Legion Service on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, July 02, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. from Castle Funeral Home. Interment to follow in Cedar Hill Ext. Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson's Society and Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund would be appreciated.
