MABEL MARGARET - 1927 - 2008 ROBBINS

ROBBINS, MABEL MARGARET - 1927 - 2008- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mabel Margaret Robbins at her home in Cross Creek, NB, Saturday, November 8, 2008. She was the beloved wife of John (Jack) Robbins for 56 years, cherished mother to Jerry, Nelda and Karen, and adored grandmother to Jayme, Andreas and Ariana. Born in Stanley, New Brunswick, on March 20, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Francis (Frank) Coughlan and Mary (Foreman) Coughlan. She graduated from Stanley Superior School in 1944 and entered Victoria Public Hospital Training School for Nurses, February 1945 on a Women's Institute (W.I.) Scholarship. She was one of the first four nurses to go to the Children's Memorial Hospital in Montreal for Affiliation. Mabel proudly graduated from the V.P.H. in 1948 as Double Prize Winner in Obstetrical and Medical Nursing and was Valedictorian of her class and achieved the highest score when she wrote her RN's in Saint John. She attended one year at New Brunswick Bible Institute in 1950-51. She nursed in Fredericton and Stanley for almost 40 years until ill health forced her to retire. She was a member of Cross Creek Baptist Church where she was a past choir member, Superintendent of the Sunday School, Church Treasurer and a member of the Women's Missionary group. Mabel loved caring for others, either human or "God's creatures" as she would call her birds and animals. She loved fixing anything from washers to water pumps. She had an "engineering mind" and always liked to keep it active by completing daily crossword puzzles, reading "fix-it" manuals or teaching herself how to research and communicate using her computer. She loved to knit and many of her socks and mittens created throughout the years were given away to those in need. She always appreciated the beauty in flowers and nature. She was the person people would call in the area if they had questions about their health or if they just needed someone to talk with. She loved her daily telephone chats with her family and life-long friends. She was always there for everyone and freely gave of her time. She always supported her family and loved their visits. Becoming a grandmother made her the proudest and happiest woman ever! It was a "mother's reward" she would say of having grandchildren and she loved Jayme, Andreas and Ariana unconditionally with all her heart and she had the biggest heart of anyone. Mabel is survived by her husband, Jack, two daughters, Nelda of Fredericton and Karen of Toronto, three grandchildren, Jayme Robbins of Edmonton, AB, Andreas and Ariana Marquis of Fredericton, sisters, Rita O'Rourke (John) of Orillia, ON and Cora Coburn of Fredericton, daughter-in-law, Joanne Robbins of Edmonton, two aunts, Elsie Mosher of Saint John, and Pearle Foreman of Moncton, sister-in-law, Anne Coughlan of Fredericton, many special and loved nieces and nephews from all over North America, and several cousins. Besides her parents and son, she was predeceased by brothers, Ian and Garth Coughlan and sister, Ina Brown. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home 302 Brookside Dr., Fredericton, NB on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9. The Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at York's Funeral Home at 2 pm with Pastor Gordon Mowry officiating.
