LUCY ELIZA (NEE WAGNER) TOMPKINS

TOMPKINS, LUCY ELIZA (NEE WAGNER) - Passed away peacefully at home on March 1st, 2009 at the age of 87. Beloved wife of the late Gerald E. Tompkins, dear mother Joan, Gary (wife Fernande), Donald (wife Carole), Timothy (wife Ann), Judy (husband Brian), and the late Nancy Belle. Grandmother to Cara, Christopher, Amy, Warren, Becky, Matthew, Heather, Kira and the late Timothy Patrick Gerald. Great grandmother to Jasmine, Justin, Connor and Jeanette. Born in West Berlin, NS and remained a proud Bluenose all her days. Survived by her brother Donald (Thelma) of Salt Spring Island, BC and her sister Mildred Wagner of Halifax, NS. She grew up in Nova Scotia then went to work in Saint John, NB during WWII. In Saint John she met and married Gerald, who was a soldier. They moved to Florenceville where Gerald built a house in which they raised their family. She was a devoted mother, always supervising her children's homework and activities, always encouraging them to be the best they could be. Involved in many community organizations; Women's Institute, Anglican Church Women, Florenceville Friendship Senior's Club, the Interfaith Bible Study Group and a faithful Anglican all her life. She organized and ran the convenience store which was a Florenceville fixture for many years. She also served as a surrogate mother to a number of young families who rented trailer sites behind her home and store. One of her proudest achievements was obtaining her high school equivalency certificate in her 50's. She had to leave school at 13 to care for her gravely ill mother and her family. A keen player of Bridge, Scrabble, Cribbage and Bingo, she kept her slightly racy sense of humor to the last. The community was a better place because of her and she will be sorely missed. Lucy will be cremated, at her wish, and visitation with the family and celebration of her life will take place on Thursday, March 5th, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at the Kilcollins Funeral Parlor, Station Road, Florenceville, NB. The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 6th, 2009 at 11am from the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd in Florenceville, NB. Rev. Douglas Painter will be officiating. A private interment service will take place in the family plot in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd in Florenceville, NB. www.kilcollins.com
