J. Earl Storey
Earl Storey passed away at Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon on February 2, 2009. Born on March 16, 1919, to Harry and Marie (Allard) Storey, at their family farm south of Saskatoon, Earl was the ninth of eleven children. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Roberta (Atkinson) Storey; by their three daughters, Shannon Michelle Storey (Brian Gamble) of Saskatoon, Dr. Shelley G. Storey of Prince Albert; and Lorraine Valerie Storey (Pat Mitchell) of Saskatoon; by his son, Brian Lance Storey of Saskatoon; by five grandchildren, Lia Storey Gamble, Dominic Storey Gamble, Sabrina (Storey) Meadows, Sean Storey, and Tammy Wilkie; by great-grandchildren Jamie Renaud, Jullian Meadows, and Alexander Jonathan Vincent Storey; by his surviving sister, Eunice Wylie; and by his many nieces, nephews, and in-laws, as well as his beloved cat Willie. He was predeceased by one grandson, Brian Earl Storey. Earl attended Normal School following his graduation from Nutana Collegiate and taught in the Arbourfield community prior to volunteering for overseas service in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. Prevented by colour-blindness from achieving a flight crew position, he spent much of the war in southern Ontario repairing airplanes and instructing his fellow servicemen. Following the war, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Education at the University of Saskatchewan and embarked on a long and rewarding career in educational administration, serving as vice-principal in Tisdale, principal in Viscount and Rosthern where he was awarded a life membership in the Royal Canadian Legion, and Superintendent of Schools in the Wilkie, Parkland, Kindersley, Swift Current Rural and LaFleche school divisions. As an educator, not only did he teach and lead, but he also helped many deserving students fund their higher education. In addition to serving students, he also served his fellow public servants for five years as president of the Saskatchewan Government Employees Union (SGEU) and played a significant role in the establishment of the National Union of Provincial Government Employees (NUPGE) in which he held the position of vice-president. Following his retirement in 1983, he returned to Saskatoon and continued his community service by playing active roles in the Bethel United Church and in the Golden K’s Kiwanis Club. Earl’s funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 7, at Bethel United Church, 1141 5th Street East, Saskatoon, with a tea to follow. Interment will take place in the Veteran’s section of Woodlawn Cemetery. Email condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Saskatoon Funeral Home has been given responsibility for arrangements. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society; the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada; or to any fund that supports research into the field of memory loss.
