MARY ALICE (VICKERS) GILL
GILL, MARY ALICE (VICKERS) - Mrs. Mary Alice Gill (Vickers) of Miramichi passed away peacefully in Burlington Ontario on May 19, 2009, at the age of 86. Born on January 8, 1923 in Nowlanville, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of Albert Vickers and Emma (Burns) Vickers. She was predeceased by her husband Gerald Gill. Mary Graduated from St Mary's Academy in Newcastle in 1939 and from Provincial Normal School (Teachers College) in Fredericton in 1940. After taking summer courses for several summers, Mary was very proud to receive her B.ED. from the University of Moncton in 1976. She loved teaching, and touched the lives of her students in Nowlanville, Barnaby River, Boiestown, Newcastle, Chatham Head and Chatham. She had a gift for writing, and was generous in sharing her gift with those who needed assistance with their writing. She was the author of several history books. Mary's Catholic faith was a very important part of her life and she was actively involved in the community of Saint Patrick's Church in Nelson-Miramichi and Saint Samuel's Church in Douglastown. For many years she was actively involved in the Miramichi Irish Festival. Mary and her husband Gerald loved the winters they spent as snowbirds in Pensacola, Florida. She loved to socialize, and spend time with the large circle of friends she had in both New Brunswick and Florida. Mary is survived by one daughter, Colleen Jokinen (Edward) of Burlington, two sons, Barry of Thunder and Gerard (Maria) of Winnipeg, eleven grandchildren, Ryan, Derek and Paul Jokinen, Christopher, Andrew and Geoffrey Gill, Jessica, Miria and Michael Gill, Kelsey and Caitlin Turner, four great grandchildren, Tyler and Cole Jokinen, and Susanna and Lily Strobel. She is also survived by six sisters, Sister Margaret Vickers, Vancouver, Ella Meahan, Sister Charlotte Vickers, Sister Alice Vickers, Saint John; Joan Kachel, San Jose, California; Alberta (Philip) Abud, Dalhousie; one brother Gerald (Helen) Vickers of Saint John; four sisters-in-law, Monica Vickers, Marie Vickers, Miramichi, Sylvia Vickers, Windsor, and Mary Vickers, Pennfield, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was predeceased by her brothers Burns Vickers, Bennie Vickers, William Vickers, Allan Vickers and Albert (Junior) Vickers, and by her brother-in-law, Blair Meahan and her sister-in-law, Margaret (Peggy) Vickers. Special thanks to the staff of Billings Court Manor in Burlington, Ontario who provided Mary with excellent care during the six ears she spent there, and who showed great compassion and tenderness during Mary's final days. Mrs. Mary Alice Gill will be resting at Davidson's Funeral Home, 597 Old King George Hwy, Miramichi, with visitation on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday May 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. from St Samuel's Roman Catholic Church, with Father Maurice Swift officiating.
