COMMANDER ARTHUR HATHEWAY MCDONALD

MCDONALD, COMMANDER ARTHUR HATHEWAY - 86, passed away peacefully at Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 28th, 2009. The only son of Frank A. McDonald and Madeleine McDonald (Hatheway) of Saint John, Rothesay and Woodman's Point, NB, he was educated at Saint John High School and Dartmouth Naval College, Portsmouth, England. After a successful career as a Naval Officer both in war and in peace, notably commanding numerous warships and serving as Queen's Harbour Master for Halifax and in senior intelligence and security positions, he retired in 1968 to the home that he had as a young man designed and built on his beloved Williams Lake. He then continued to be active and successful in both the furniture business and in real estate, with many years at Royal Trust as a sales agent. More importantly, he was successful at life. A lifelong outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, training Labrador retrievers, skiing, scuba diving, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing. A man of many talents, he learnt from scratch computer programming in his 60s and bagpiping in his 70s. Most of all he loved time with his entire family who returned his love deeply and will miss him greatly. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary (Wallace); his children Janet Riddell (Raymond Riddell), Halifax and Woodman's Point, Robin McDonald (Karen Lyle), Halifax, Katherine McDonald (Raymond Cannings), Ottawa and Yolande Delmar ( Chris Delmar), Great Falls, Virginia; grandchildren Dylan McDonald, Patrick and Jessica Riddell, Max, Jacqueline and Jackson Delmar; his sister Nancy Steele (Captain Richard Steele) and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents and by his sister, Margaret Pickersgill. A special thanks is given to all of the caring people at Veterans Memorial Building who worked so hard to make his last years there comfortable. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 1st, 2009 at St. Augustine Anglican Church, 290 Purcell's Cove Road, Halifax with Reverend John O. Scott presiding. Interment of ashes will take place privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a gift may be made to Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building or a charity of your choice.
