John James MacKay, 70 years, passed away suddenly at the QEII Hospital in Halifax, on Tuesday, February 10, 2009.
Born and raised in Stellarton, John was a son of the late John James and Florence (Rawlings) MacKay.
He married Evelyn (Fanning) in 1957. They made their home in Hillside for the past 51 years. John began his career at Medical Hall Pharmasave in 1957, working for the late Donnelly MacKenzie. He purchased the business in 1982, becoming shared owner with his son, Kevin. John was extremely passionate about his work, going above and beyond the call of duty in serving his customers. He continued to work until his passing. John had a love of music, being self-taught in piano, guitar and harmonica. He also enjoyed sports, being instrumental in the founding of the Trenton Community Rink in the early ‘70s. He loved hockey and ball, and in recent years was a proud fan attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was also a member of the Wednesday Night Bowling League, where he shared many laughs with his friends. In summer months, John could be found spending time at his cottage, boating and fishing. He made this his home from April to September, and truly enjoyed his time at the lake. John was a jack-of-all-trades, quick to lend a hand to family and friends whenever there was a need. He was a perfectionist in his work, and took great pride in his accomplishments. He was a member of Christ the King Parish in Trenton.
John is survived by his wife of 51 years, Evelyn (Fanning); sons: Kevin (Anna), Stellarton; Scott (Janice), Kearney Lake; Rob (Jane), Stellarton; sister, Rosaria (Dom), Connecticut; brother, Frank, Halifax; grandchildren: Kara, Dylan, Braeden and Logan, all of Stellarton, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Jim and Alan; and sister, Marie.
Family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stellarton on Friday at 11 a.m. with Father Gary MacPherson and Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery.
