ORR, JAMES WILLIAM - Jimmy passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at his residence in West Saint John with family by his side. Born on December 16, 1936 in Saint John, he was the son of the late Fred and Norma (Lee) Orr. Jimmy joined the Royal Canadian Navy at age 17 and later worked for Canadian Pacific Railway but the majority of his working life was spent at the Port of Saint John as a longshoreman and then a steam ship checker. He retired after 36 years and in 2004 was appointed as a Director of the Port Authority. A life-long Union leader, he held positions as the Secretary Treasurer and President of the International Longshoremen Association Local 1764 (now ILA Local 273), as President of the SJ District Labour Council and a long time delegate of the Saint John District Labour Council. Champion of the underdog, he actively supported international causes such as the Liverpool Dock Workers strike for many years and the NO CANDU for Argentina protest of 1979, which resulted in the release of several Argentinean political prisoners. He also served on the Board of Directors for Romero House, as a trustee for the Hatheway Trust and Commissioner of the SJ Port Development Commission. Jimmy was an avid reader and gardener and a well respected chef. He enjoyed hunting, annual trips to Bar Harbour and the Boston Red Sox. He is survived by his life partner and fiancée, Carol Olive; daughter, Jamie (Jeremy) McOuat, of Oxford, England; step-son, Christopher Chamberlain, of Edmonton, Alberta; brother, Bob (Connie) Orr, of Quispamsis and nephew, Steven (Jennifer) Orr, of Quispamsis. He was "Papa Jimmy" to Carol's sons, David, Jamie and Peter; grandchildren, Tom, Andrew, Shawna, Alanna and Jena and great grandson, Ethan. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, David Orr. Resting at Castle Funeral Home, "Fallsview Chapel", 309 Lancaster Ave., Saint John West, (634-1701) visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 and Wednesday, July 01, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 02, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. from St. George's Anglican Church. Interment to follow at Fernhill Cemetery. There will be a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #2, following the interment at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jimmy may be made to Romero House-Soup Kitchen.
