EDNA E. (BELL) ROBERTSON

ROBERTSON, EDNA E. (BELL) - November 13, 1920 - August 3, 2009 - Edna Effie Robertson, RN, of Calgary, Alberta, and formerly of Miramichi (Chatham), passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital, in Calgary, surrounded by family, on Monday, August 3, 2009, at the age of 88. Born in Empress, Alberta, on November 13, 1920 and grew up in St. Martins, N.B., she was the daughter of the late Roy W. and Ethel I. (Smith) Bell. She graduated from Saint John General Hospital, N.B., as an R.N., in 1943. She was Commissioned in the Canadian Army in 1944 as a Lieutenant (Nursing Sister), subsequently retiring from the Army in August 1945. It was during her time in the Army where she met Len, who had been invalided briefly back to Fredericton, where she was serving. She and Len were married on September 8, 1945, and moved to Chatham in 1947. Edna was content as a homemaker, devoting her time to her growing family. She was nonetheless active in the community, as a member of St. Andrews United Church, Miramichi; a former Sunday School Teacher; a member of the Edith Bell Unit of the U.C.W.; a member of the Earl of Chatham Unit of the I.O.D.E.; a former member as well as former Worthy Matron of the Prince Charles Chapter, O.E.S. Edna was a long time member of both the Miramichi Golf & Country Club and the Chatham Curling Club, and won the Ladies' Cup championship in golf in 1973. She and Len were avid gardeners, both vegetable and flowers, and her children and grandchildren were the recipients of many beautiful quilts that she crafted over the years. In later life, she was an avid Duplicate Bridge player, a member of the Chatham/Newcastle clubs, and enjoyed playing both locally and regionally. She was described as a good bridge player, quiet at the table but never intimidated. She is survived by one daughter, Janet L. and her husband John Champion, of Calgary; two sons, Leonard B. Robertson and wife, Laysha, of Delta, B.C., Ian D. Robertson, of Edmonton; one sister, Rhea (Bell) Moody, of Saint John NB; four grandchildren, Richard Robertson and Michael (Deja) Robertson and Timothy Champion and Barbara (Dave) Hyciek as well as six nieces and three nephews. She was predeceased by Leonard, her husband of 63 years; one son, Roy; two sisters, Audrey (Bell) Glover & Lillian Bell; two brothers, Hugh Bell and Wesley Bell. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, NB, on August 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held from St. Andrews United Church, Miramichi, on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to any charity of the donors' choice, would be appreciated by the family.
