Watson, Ruth Elaine - 56, Truro passed away peacefully at home, with her loving family by her side on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of Vera (Robbins) and the late Karl Stewart. Ruth was an active member of the Women Alike Abreast A River Dragon Boat Team in New Glasgow. She thought it was time that breast cancer survivors in the area have their own dragon boat and spearheaded a very successful campaign to acquire one for Shortt’s Lake. Ruth worked at the Truro Centennial pool for many years. She was very active in volunteering for many organizations, especially ones that were cancer related. Ruth enjoyed spending time in Westbrook, Maine with her close friends the Wormell’s and at Rose Bay with the girl’s. She was an avid car racing fan and enjoyed following the Special Olympics Swim Team. Ruth was the type of person, everyone loved and cared for. She had a wonderful personality and people were easily drawn to her. Ruth is survived by her husband, Michael; daughter, Dawn (Derick) Canning, Upper Stewiacke; her grandson, Aiden whom she adored; brothers, Gary (Reny), Brookfield, Dana (Anne Dugas), North River and Earl (Angela), Milford; several nieces and nephews. Ruth’s family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to the V.O.N. for their kindness and compassion, Dr. David Henderson and Lisa Wilson from Palliative Care, Rev. Larry Harrison, Queenie Hatcher for taking such great care of Ruth during the last week of her illness and the Boilermakers International for their support. Visitation will be held from 2 - 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 14; a celebration of Ruth’s life will take place 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 15, both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, Rev. Larry Harrison officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Special Olympics, Caring for Cancer Patients or Survivors on Shortt’s Lake Dragon Boat Team.
