O. HAROLD WARWICK

WARWICK, O. HAROLD - O. Harold Warwick, BA, MA (Oxon), MD, FRCP(C), FRCP, FACP, LLD, CM, died peacefully at University Hospital, London, Ontario in his 95th year on 21 October 2009. Devoted and loving husband of Barbara (née Gzowski) for 67 years. Beloved father of two daughters and two sons: Wendy (Peter Martin), Victoria (Brian Dingle), Glynn (Jane) and Peter (Heather). Adored grandfather of: Cindy Perrin, Kristi Stucke, Peter Martin, Jenny Horner. Beloved step-grandfather of Elizabeth Moore, Kellie O'Leary, Dustin Alix, Nick Dingle, Gillian Dingle, and Rachel Dingle, and he has many great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his three siblings who survive him: Marjorie Miller of Penticton, BC, William Warwick and Phyllis Durrant, both of Westfield, NB. Harold was born and raised in Saint John, NB and was later a graduate of Mount Allison University, McGill University and Oxford University. Highlights of his career included: Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford for two years, Gold medallist in his graduating medical class at McGill (1940), medical officer in the RCAF in WW II for four years in Canada and England (studying problems associated with high altitude flying), first joint Executive Director of the National Cancer Institute of Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society from 1948 to 1955, senior Physician at the Toronto General Hospital and the Princess Margaret Hospital, Dean of Medicine and later Vice-President (Health Sciences) of University of Western Ontario (UWO). In this latter role he was one of the central figures in building the new medical school, the dental school and University Hospital. He received Honourary LLD degrees from both Mount Allison University and UWO. He became a Member of the Order of Canada in 1990. A memorial service will be conducted at St. Paul's Cathedral, 472 Richmond St. at Queens Ave., London, on Saturday, October 31 at 11:00 a.m. by Archdeacon D. Ian Grant.
