CHALIFOUR, MARJORIE JOYCE - It is with sadness that we announce the death of Marjorie Joyce Chalifour at her home in Fredericton, N.B. on December 2, 2009. Born in Montreal on January 19, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Alexander Rowan and Ione Frances (Gunning) Rowan. Marjorie had fulfilling careers as a mother and microbiologist. Marjorie graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of New Brunswick in 1945. She was employed as a medical technologist at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Edmunston NB and then at the Saint John General Hospital in Saint John NB. In 1971 she returned to UNB to continue her studies, receiving her M.Sc. in Microbiology in 1974. Marjorie then was employed as the laboratory manager at the New Brunswick Dairy Products Commission in Fredericton until her retirement in 1985. Throughout her life Marjorie enjoyed many volunteer activities and hobbies including keeping honeybees, goats and selling yogurt at the Boyce Market. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Jean Paul (2006) and her daughter Jane Elizabeth Magarvey (1989) of Saint John NB. Marjorie is survived by daughters, Mary Alice of Fredericton and Suzanne Joyce (Robert Chénier) of Ottawa and sons, Arthur Paul (Renee Machat) of Cranbrook, BC and Robert James (Lorraine) of Montreal. Marjorie was the proud grandmother of Shuca Diorio (Derek) of Ottawa, Mindy Leigh Magarvey of Saint John, Kimberley Ann Magarvey of Calgary, Ani Chénier of Hamilton, Alexis Chénier of Ottawa, Alanna Chalifour of Montreal and Sula Jane Chalifour of Fredericton and the proud great-grandmother of Ella and Fia Diorio of Ottawa. There will be no public visitation. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on Monday, Dec. 7th, 2009 at 11 am with The Very Rev'd Keith Joyce officiating, assisted by Canon Neville Cheeseman. Interment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fredericton Extramural Hospital Fund.
