JAMES - 1922-2009 STURGEON

STURGEON, JAMES - 1922-2009 - James Sturgeon, of Blackville, passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at the Miramichi Hospital, at the age of 87. Born in Blackville, he was the son of the late Lester and Margaret (Brennan) Sturgeon. He worked at the Ammunition Depot and attended St Andrew's United Church, in Blackville. James was a member of the Credit Union Board of Directors for 38 years and became vice president in 1968, a position he held until becoming president in 1977. He also played a prominent part in the opening of a new credit union building in Blackville in 1996. He also served as chairman of the school board for 12 years, a member of the hospital board, also for 12 years, treasurer of St Andrew's United Church for 25 years, and six years as a member of the St John Ambulance. He will be sadly missed by his wife Betty (Power) of Blackville; sons David (Susan) and John (Trudy Abernethy) both of Fredericton; daughters Daphne (Richard Jardine) of Blackville, and Diana of Switzerland; sister Ruby Mills of Fredericton; brother Russell (Leona) of Nova Scotia; six grandchildren Serena, Alison, Laura, Jennifer, Matthew, and Bryan; three great grandchildren Kristy, Cassandra, and Lilly; and several nieces and nephews. The family received relatives and friends at St Andrew's United Church Hall, in Blackville, on Friday, December 18, 2009, from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm. A legion service, led by Father Douglas Barret, took place at 7 pm. Funeral service was held on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at 2 pm, from St Andrew's United Church, with Rev. Olive Ann Archibald officiating. Organist Roma Gallan led the congregation in the singing of the hymns "Here I Am Lord", "Precious Lord Take My Hand", and "Silent Night". Soloist Roy MacRae, accompanied by pianist Marg Craig, also sang "At the End of the Road". A eulogy was given by granddaughter Serena Jardine. Pallbearers were Ron Hachey, Ryan D'Alessio, Tony D'Alessio, Pete Mountain, Royden Donald, and Jason Brennan. Honorary pallbearers were Louis Donahue, Hayward Sturgeon, Gerald Gillespie, Roy MacRae, Alonzo Sturgeon, and Wendal MacKinley. Interment followed in the church cemetery. As expression of sympathy, donations to St Andrew's United Church, or to a memorial of one's choice, would be appreciated by the family.
