Born in Bath, NB, he was the son of the late George and Mary (McLaughlin) Dionne. In addition to his wife, Precille (Babin), he is survived by two daughters Jacqueline Kippers (Steven) of Port Elgin, ON, Nicole Lagace (Richard) of North Bay, ON; three sons, Martin (Andrew Chow-Woon) of Toronto, Matthew (Jeanette) of Aylesford, NS; Sean of Moose Jaw, Sask; three sisters, Anne of Woodstock, Marie of Smith Falls, ON, Marian (Barry Hennessey) of Armstrong, BC; three brothers, William (Bill) of Woodstock, Henry (Barb) of Lethbridge, Alberta, Nicholas (Ruth) of London, ON; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Maurice was predeceased by one sister-in-law, Vivian and two brothers, Joe and Paul. Maurice attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Millerton and was a member of the Canadian Liberal Party of Canada. Maurice grew up on a farm in Johnville, New Brunswick, and before he left home for teacher's college, the family moved to a farm on the out skirts of Woodstock. After completing teacher's college in 1956, his first job as a teacher was in St. George. He taught in various other locations, including Yellowknife and Baie Comeau. In Baie Comeau, he met Precille, and the two fell in love. They were married in 1961, and began their family in 1963. After moving about in Eastern Canada, Maurice and Precille settled on the Miramichi, where Maurice took a job as Principal of Millerton High School in 1966. Politics was always Maurice's second love. In fact he knew he wanted to be a Member of Parliament from the age of 12. In 1974, he secured the Liberal party nomination in what was then the riding of Northumberland-Miramichi. He served in that capacity until 1984 and was elected again in 1988, and left politics in 1993. As a politician, his proudest accomplishments included bringing jobs to the Miramichi in form of expansion of the pulp mill, dredging the Miramichi River, and securing the prison for Renous. He was also very fond of the many different groups who make up the Miramichi riding and was a strong supporter of the francophone and Migmac communities. On November 17, 2003, he succumbed to Alzheimer's after a protracted 12-year battle. The family will receive relatives and friends at Northumberland Funeral Home on Thursday, November 20, 2003 from 7 to 9 and on Friday, November 21, 2003 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
