Donald R. Lewis
Donald Ross Lewis 1927-2004 The death of Donald R. Lewis, 77 years, husband of Barbara of Salisbury, occurred at the Moncton Hospital on Friday, January 16, 2004 following a lengthy illness. Born in Moncton January 7, 1927 he was the son of the late Clarence and Daphna (Reade) Lewis. He was Post Master in Salisbury for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1987. He was also a member of Salisbury Baptist Church. A veteran of the Second World War, he served overseas with the RCAF, he was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Salisbury Branch #31. A true sportsman he was a member of the Moncton Golf and Country Club, the Petitcodiac Valley Golf and Country Club. He had also been a member of the Albert County Men's Bowling League; he coached in the Moncton Minor Hockey Association in the 1960's; he played and coached softball in the late 1940's and 1950's. In 1950, while on his honeymoon, he discovered golf after which it consumed his life and he went on to win many local and provincial titles. A mentor to his son and grandson his passion for golfing is evident in their games. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Barbara (Alward); one son, Donald Dwight of Ottawa; one daughter, Cathy Dawn (Byron) Cole of Colpitts Settlement; his granddaughter, Kelly (Andrew) Take and their son Oliver, all of Cambridge, England; his grandson, Aaron Cole (Shauna) and Denee and Kayla. He is also survived by his sisters, Ruth of Indiana, Hilda (Jerry) Sears of Riverview, Joy Haley of Salisbury; his brothers, Roland (Joan) of Salisbury and Melvin (Diana) of Berry Mills; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brother Reade; sister, Kaye; his mother and father-in-law, Nelson and Helen Alward. By request of the deceased there will not be any visiting hours or public funeral service. A private family graveside service will be held at Fairhaven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
