George "Mason" Sutherland HALIFAX, NS - We regret to announce the passing of George "Mason" Sutherland on Sunday, May 9, 2004 at the age of 78. Born in Chicago, Ill. the only child of Erma Mason and Elijah Sutherland, Mason moved back to Crossroads Country Harbour at the age of four. Mason left the Crossroads at the young age of 16 to make his way in the big city of Halifax and worked as a machinist at Maritime Cylinder and Grinding Company. He enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces where he served overseas in Holland and was stationed in Germany during the Occupation. In 1962, Mason began his distinguished career with the Canadian Postal Service taking him from the maintenance division all the way to National President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Mason was a devoted husband to Norma (Heffler); loving father to Greg (Susan) Moncton, NB, Linda Gray (Val King), Calgary, AB, Debra Moffatt (David), Sydney; proud grandfather to Greg (Wendy Currie) Sutherland, Chad (Dara) Sutherland, both of Halifax, Ryan and Heather Moffatt, Sydney; great grandfather to Tyler Mason Sutherland and Noah Egan Sutherland, both of Halifax. Mason's strong Christian faith was evident in his lifelong service to the Baptist Church as he was a Charter Member in the Foundation of the Birch Cove Baptist Church and served as a dedicated deacon. Mason was an avid model train railroader and a member of the Kingfisher Campers of NCHA where he spent quality time with his family and friends. He was a respected and valued member of the Bedford Baptist Church and the Heritage Club. Mason, Dad and Grampy will be sadly missed by his loving family. Memorial service will be conducted in Bedford Baptist Church, 38 Rocky Lake Dr. on Wednesday, May 12 at 11 am followed by a reception at the Church. The family would like to send their appreciation for the loving support provided by the Palliative Care Unit and request, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in memory of Mason Sutherland to the Palliative Care, QEII, Attention 7A Centennial Building, 1278 Tower Rd., Halifax, NS B3H 2Y9.
