After a long and courageous challenge with cancer, Sr. Catherine (Cappy) Peters, CND died February 25, 2009, at Rocky Mountain House Hospital, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, in her 78th year. Cappy's gifts, talents and unstinting generosity touched the lives of many people in both Eastern and Western Canada. As professor of Home Economics at St. FX for 30 years, she shared her passion for teaching young adults the skills that they could use to contribute to society. Then, in 1991, when she went west, she continued her passion for teaching, now in informal ways, through discussion groups, Bible study groups, and peace education with staff and students at Ecole Rocky Elementary, as well as with staff and students at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School in Innisfail, AB. In addition, Cappy's gift of hospitality and welcome touched the lives of all CNDs in Alberta so that "Rocky" became the center of celebration for special occasions. Many people in the town also benefited from Cappy's warm hospitality. She leaves behind a legacy of caring, compassion and justice for the equality of all. Sister Cappy is survived by her family: her sister, Patricia "Trish" MacMillan of Charlottetown, P.E.I.; her brother, Pete Peters of Prince George, B.C.; her niece, Jo-Ann (Allan) MacDonald, grandniece Meaghan MacDonald, and sisters-in-law Doreen Peters of Charlottetown, P.E.I., and Eileen Peters of Summerside, P.E.I. She is also survived by the Congregation of Notre Dame, in particular Sister Margie MacDonell of Rocky Mountain House and the other CNDs living in Alberta. She was predeceased by her parents, Moses and Josephine Peters; her brothers, Clarence and W.B. Benny Peters; sister, Faustina Weatherbie; nephew, Terrence Peters; sister-in-law, June Peters; and brother-in-law, Ambrose Weatherbie. A prayer vigil was held at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Rocky Mountain House on Friday, February 27, 2009, at 8 p.m. Cappy will be flown to Charlottetown, P.E.I., for a vigil at Notre Dame Convent, 246 Sydney Street, Charlottetown, on Monday, March 2, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., followed by a funeral liturgy at the Holy Redeemer Church on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at a later date in the Charlottetown Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sister Cappy's memory may be made to the Central Alberta Cancer Clinic, Bag 5030, 3942 50A Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 6R2, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation or the Palliative Care Unit of the Prince Edward Home.
