John D. Cunningham
John D. Cunningham 1929 - 2004 BALLA PHILLIP, NB - John David Cunningham, 75, husband of the late Olive (Murphy) Cunningham, Balla Phillip, NB, passed away at home on Sunday, September 5, 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late John Cunningham Sr. and the late Jeannie (Miller) Cunningham. He was a retired Ironworker and served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War. John was a very special person who dearly loved his family, work and home. Corporal Cunningham, aka "Brooklyn," received an honorable discharge following active service with the 69th Field Artillery Battalion of the United States Army in Korea. He was awarded a United Nations Service Medal and a Bronze Star for courage, resourcefulness and exemplary devotion to duty as wire team chief. For 30 years, "The Scotsman" walked the steel, building the tallest buildings and biggest bridges in the world for United States Steel and Bethlehem Steel. In 2004, John received his 50 year pin with Iron Workers Local Union 361, NYC. He is survived by four daughters, Betty-Jean Friedman of Main River, Barbara Robins (Richard) of California, Kim Albert (Maurice) of Bells Mills, and Ellen Barger (Doug) of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren, Amber, Jonathan, Kyle Friedman, Jason Robins, Phillip, Luc, Marc Albert, Gabriel Barger; brother-in-law, John Murphy in Korea. He was predeceased by wife, Olive; and a brother, Robert. Resting at Thompson's Funeral Home, Richibucto with visitation Tuesday from 7 to 9pm, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm, and Thursday from 9am until time of departure for funeral. A prayer vigil will be held Wednesday evening at 8:30pm. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, South Branch on Thursday, September 9, 2004 at 11am.
