Rose Mabel Gray (Leaman)
Rose Mabel Gray (Leaman) BRANTFORD, ON - Rose Gray, December 31, 1905, died on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at St. Joseph's Lifecare Centre, Brantford, ON in her 99th year. Rose was the daughter of John Archibald Leaman and Marjorie Cora Annie Elizabeth Upham of Albert County, NB and was predeceased by her husband, Gurney Alfred Gray in 1989 and by her infant son, Gurney Alfred Gray, Junior in 1929. Rose is survived by her children Elizabeth Mable (the late Percy H. Sherwood; Zoltan Tayti) of Welland, ON; Kathleen Grace (widow of James N. Soucoup) of Moncton, NB; Stanley Robert (Carole Wills) of Hepworth, ON. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Sherwoods: Nancy, David, Stephen; Soucoups: Gail, Susan, Janet-Rose, William, Trudy; Grays: Timothy, Robert; 14 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; predeceased by one grandchild. Rose lived in Moncton from a young age until 1951 when she and Gurney moved to Ontario, living in Welland, Brantford and Paris. In New Brunswick, Rose worked at The T. Eaton Company, Ltd., and in Welland at Mitchell's Ladies Wear. In Brantford she worked at London Silk and Wool, Waddington's Jewellers and St. Joseph's Hospital after graduating, in her fifties, as a Registered Practical Nurse. After leaving the hospital, Rose owned and operated Gray's Confectionery. Later they moved to Paris where she again owned a Convenience Store under the same name for seven years before retiring to Brantford where she and Gurney lived in Fordview Court for many years. In Moncton she was a member of Highfield Baptist Church and in Brantford of First Baptist. Rose was a member of a number of clubs and lodges and held office in many of them: I. O. O. F., Loyal Orange Benevolent Association, True Blues, Eastern Star, Rebekka, Suanna, Crystal Lodge, Daughters of England. She was an Associate member of the Canadian Legion. Rose was a member of Patterson Avenue Seniors, Eagle Place Seniors, Brant Tower Seniors and of Charlotte Street Seniors where she was Past President of the Club, served a term on its Board, and was a member of the Band. Cremation was arranged through Beckett - Glaves Family Funeral Centre, Brantford, and two Memorial Services will be held at a later date - one in Ontario and one in New Brunswick. A Tree will be planted in memory of Rose in the Beckett - Glaves Memorial Forest. In Moncton, a donation to the Donor Wall, Moncton Hospital, in memory of Rose.
