Dr. Gordon Algie SAULT STE MARIE, ON - A Chief of Radiology at the former Plummer Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste Marie has died, Dr. Gordon Haig Algie died early Saturday, May 21, 2005 at the Sault Area Hospital following a brief illness. He was born June 18, 1924 in Moncton, New Brunswick, the oldest of four children of the late Robert Laird Algie and his wife, the late Josephine Jean Algie (nee Gordon). Dr. Algie was educated at Moncton High School and at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He was a graduate in medicine in 1949 at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Following internship in Saint John, New Brunswick he operated a general practice in medicine in Bathurst, New Brunswick. He completed specialty training in radiology at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec and moved to Sault Ste Marie in 1954. Dr. Algie became Chief of Radiology at the former Plummer Memorial Hospital, now part of the Sault Area Hospital, and worked there continuously until his retirement in 1987. He also consulted in radiology in hospitals along the Lake Superior and Northern Lake Huron shores at Wawa, Blind River and Elliot Lake. Following his retirement from the Plummer staff, Dr. Algie continued work as a consultant in radiology at The Medical Centre Clinic in Sault Ste Marie. He was active in the Algoma Medical Society, including a term as president. He was president of the board of the Family YMCA when it decided to build its existing facilities on McNabb Street. Dr. Algie was also a former medical officer with the 49th Regiment Military Reserve Unit in Sault Ste Marie. He was predeceased by both of his parents; by his brother, Robert Bruce Algie of Fort Frances, Ontario and his sister, Margaret Jean Mendelson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his brother, Wallace Lloyd Algie and his wife, Shirley, of Belleville, Ontario. Dr. Algie is also survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Anne Algie (nee MacQuarrie); their four children and families as follows, Jim and Maggie Algie and their daughter, Jessica, of Owen Sound, Ontario; Heather and John Bailey and their children, Scott, Anne and Emily, of Montreal; Dr. Robert and Janet Algie and their children, James and Heather, of Fort Frances; William and Barbara Algie and their children, Lauren and Gena Van Blunk of Philadelphia. A memorial service is to be held this summer for interment at Mountain Cemetery in Jocelyn Township, St. Joseph Island. Final details of the memorial service have yet to be completed.
