HAHN, Joseph (1912-2009)
With deep sadness we announce the passing of Joseph (Joe) Hahn on February 27, 2009, at the age of 96. Husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, entrepreneur and great friend to many. Dad will be remembered for his strength of character, integrity, sense of humour and unwavering faith. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mabel, and a grandchild. Left to treasure his memory are: Dorothy, his devoted and loving wife of 45 years; children Dale (Judy), Neil (Sandy), Linda (Rick) Shirley; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Joe was born on August 26, 1912, the fourth oldest of eleven children born to George and Christina Hahn who immigrated to Canada in 1910 from Starabol, Russia. Joe farmed in the Hodgeville area for a number of years before moving to Swift Current. His entrepreneurship led him into businesses Star Taxi, City Bus, Hahn Bus Lines and Hahn Driver Education School. He felt his journey in life was enriched by friendships formed through business and community service. He was a President of Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, St. Patrick's Home and School Association and a member of the Saskatchewan Film Council. He served as a member on numerous boards including Saskatchewan Safety Council and was a founding member of Swift Current Multicultural Society. Joe was an active member of St. Michael's Church, and an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus 4th degree. He received the Rotary Club prestigious "Paul Harris" award. One of Joe's fond memories was the Rotary Centennial 1967 Expo bus trip from Swift Current to Montreal. Joe was a source of strength to his family, ever loving, encouraging, and supportive to lend a hand or just listen. He treasured family reunions, a time to reacquaint with relatives and share memories of by-gone days. He and Dorothy spent their retirement years travelling with relatives and visiting his children. He is remembered for his generosity to many. He was blessed with a wonderful sense of humour; practical joking and he too enjoyed the antics of another. His sense of wit carried through to his last days...this we the family hold dear. We will miss Joe dearly; his love and memories will remain with us forever. A celebration of these 96 years was held at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church with Father Antony presiding on Thursday March 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. The organist was Julie Randall and Sacred Heart Parish Choir. The readers were Mena Hahn, Julie Shirley, Jenna Shirley and Jessica Shirley. Soloists were Julie Shirley, Jenna Shirley and Jessica Shirley. The pallbearers were Trevor Hahn, Tyler Hahn, Jay Hahn, Jeff Shirley, Nathan Shirley and Joe Shirley. The Honor Guard was formed by the 4th Degree Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus. Interment was held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery and the reception followed in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted towards the Rotary Wheelchair Foundation, Box 383, Swift Current, SK, S9H 3V8 or The Canadian Diabetes Association, 917A Albert St. Regina, SK, S4R 2P6. Warren's Funeral home is entrusted with the arrangements.
