Elizabeth Noreen Vickers Mongovan STAMFORD, CT - Elizabeth Noreen Vickers Mongovan, of Stamford, CT passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 after a brief illness. Born on November 23, 1916 in Brownville Jct, Maine, she was the 2nd daughter and 9th child of Florance A. Vickers (dec) and Margaret E. (Bagot) Vickers (dec). She was educated in Brownville Jct schools and the Eastern Maine Medical Center School of Nursing. She was awarded a State of Maine gold medal in public speaking while at Brownville Jct High School. She began her career as a lab technican and chief nurse for her brother, Dr. Martyn A. Vickers Sr. of Bangor, Maine. In 1940 she married William D. Mongovan II (dec) of Bangor and had one son, William D. Mongovan III of Stamford, CT. With her love for children, she began teaching and started with the primary grades. Family moves took her to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and later Greenwich, CT. While in Greenwich she established the first preschool program at Greenwich Catholic Middle School after teaching second grade at St. Catherine's School in Riverside for many years. She also was a teacher of CCD for St. Agnes Parish in Greenwich, CT where she and her husband were founding members and St. Thomas More Parish in Darien, CT. She spent her summers in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada, the birth place of her father where she found her passion fishing the famous Miramichi River. In a small community named Howard, New Brunswick she taught religion classes and raised money for many community causes including establishing a scholarship fund to motivate and support children from the area to pursue a post secondary education. In later years she enjoyed sitting by the banks of the river sketching. She is survived by her son, William D. Mongovan III of Stamford and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins spread throughout Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New Brunswick, Canada The family will receive friends at the Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT on Sunday, May 21 from 4 to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Monday, May 22 at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 247 Stanwich Road, Cos Cob, CT. Interment will be in the family plot at Pine Tree Cemetery, Brownville Jct, Maine In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to The Greenwich Catholic School, 471 North Street, Greenwich, CT 06830
