Barbara Bernice Downing (nee Colpitts)

Barbara Bernice Downing (nee Colpitts) 1928-2006 It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Downing announces her passing on September 19, 2006 at the age of 78. Loving wife of the late Phil Downing. Dearly beloved mother of Carol of Brampton and John (Carol Pelger) of Carp. Cherished grandmother of Emily, Megan and Allison. Predeceased by her parents Russell and Geraldine (Fulton) Colpitts and brother Stanley Colpitts (Kay). Will be sadly missed by her sisters Pauline Lewis (Karl), Pearl Colpitts, Carol Lowerison (Bliss), Lillian Forbes (Reg), Sandra Atkinson (Ted) and brother Max Colpitts (Marilyn) as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Barbara was born and raised in Colpitts Settlement, New Brunswick. In 1949, she graduated from the nursing program at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She and Phil married in 1952 and together with their children, resided for many years in Beaconsfield, Quebec. Barbara and Phil retired to Kingston and after Phil's death in 2001, Barbara joined John and Carol in Carp. She was a regular patron of the Carp Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings and enjoyed the friendship and support of fellow group members at her Lung Association meetings. She was a mentor and much-loved after-school companion to her granddaughters. Barbara was selfless and will be remembered as a caring, thoughtful and devoted mother. We miss her very much. A Memorial Service celebrating Barbara's life will be held in Colpitts Settlement on October 8, 2006 at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Colpitts Community Cemetery or to the Lung Association would be appreciated.
