Lynn Frances Irlam 1946-2006 HALIFAX - With profound sadness the family of Lynn Frances Irlam announces the death of their beloved daughter and sister in Halifax on November 20, 2006. She is survived by her partner of 32 years, Patrick Mabey, Halifax; father, George Irlam; sister, Zondra Lee, and brother, Richard, all of Miramichi. Her beloved mother, Elizabeth Irlam, predeceased her in 2002. Lynn was born in Miramichi (former Newcastle) in March 1946 and attended Harkins and Miramichi Valley High School. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of New Brunswick, graduating with a bachelor's degree in arts in 1968. She joined C.U.S.O. (Canadian University Students Overseas) and traveled to Africa and worked as a school teacher in the mountain village of Blantyre in Malawi. Her C.U.S.O. companion and lifelong friend was Patricia Langridge of Banff, Alta. Lynn and Patricia spent their school holidays hitchhiking through Africa. When her C.U.S.O. contract was completed, Lynn and Patricia took six months to return home, traveling through Asia as two single women on the road, backpacking they had many amazing adventures. Lynn returned safely in 1971. In 1972, she attended Dalhousie University and obtained a Bachelor of Education degree. She then went to the Maritime School of Social Work and studied the field of Social Policy. In 1975, Lynn graduated with a Master's degree in Social Work. After receiving the Social Work degree, she worked for the Family Service Association in Halifax as a therapist and personal educator for 18 months. In 1977, Lynn met Debbie Castle at a workshop at the Tatamagouche Centre. They made an immediate personal and professional connection that has lasted to the present. Lynn and Debbie started their incorporated company, People Development, in 1977. At the beginning, it was just Debbie and Lynn, but the company grew to include a considerable staff of associate trainers. The company completed contracts across Canada and around the world and continues to this day. In 1982, Lynn began to work with Saint Francis Xavier University on the adult education diploma program. She became a principal trainer and was their most senior associate at the time of her illness. Lynn traveled across Canada and into the United States working for the program. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday, November 22, in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, November 23, in Saint John's United Church, Windsor Street, Halifax, conducted by Rev. Mary Haylock. Interment in Miramichi Cemetery, New Brunswick, at a date to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to United Way of Canada.
