Norman Mansour
Norman Mansour 1925 - 2006 AMHERST, NS - On Friday, December 1st, 2006, Amherst lost one of it's most dedicated citizens. Norman Mansour, entrepreneur, retail merchant, mayor and active participant in many clubs and groups passed away in the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre at the age of 81. Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Michael and Devida (Cosey) Mansour. Norman graduated from the Amherst Senior High in 1942, working with his father in the clothing store. At the age of 26, Norman found himself a partner in Mansour's Ltd. with his cousin Theo, with whom he work for 52 years. Serving as mayor of Amherst for three consecutive terms from 1970 to 1979, he oversaw the construction of the first shopping centre, a new fire department, a business education centre, public works garage and paved over 600 parking spaces downtown. Under Norman's direction the first police commission and human rights commission were formed, as well as the hospital being organized into a separate corporation. While enacting all of these developments and advancements, the town operated continually on a surplus. An average guy, he never wore the mayor's chain of office at official functions because he wanted people to recognize him as one of their own. Norman particularly enjoyed children, making annual visits to the local schools during his administration. An ardent supporter of the Liberal Party he ran for MLA in 1978. Norman was past master of the Masonic Lodge, past president of the Amherst Curling Club, a member of the Golf Club, former director of the Credit Union, Kidney Foundation, Family and Children's Services and former vice- president of the United Appeal. He was a member of the Christ Church and former superintendent of the Sunday School. Married 55 years, Norman will be sadly missed by his wife the former Violet (Angevine), Amherst; two daughters, Michelene (Larry MacDonald) Curry, Charlottetown and Keri (Bradley) Berneche, Bromont, QC; a son, Kevin (Laurie), Toronto, ON; son-in-law, Raymond (Red) Curry, Amherst; five grandchildren, Kevin, Jillian, Kylie, Matthew and Meaghann; six great grandchildren, Jake, Josh, Julia, Brenden, Isaak and Owen; a sister, Mary Nicol, Vancouver, BC and her children, Michael, Janet and Andy; also, Cousin Alexandra Mansour, Jeanette, George, Robert and Valerie. He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Donald Nicol and cousin, Theo Mansour. Norman's remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (902-667-8777) from where visitation will be held Tuesday December 5th, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 6th, 2006 at 11 am, from Christ Church, Anglican Church, Amherst, burial at a later date.
