Hortense LeBlanc
Hortense LeBlanc 1915 - 2007 SHEDIAC RIVER, NB - Hortense LeBlanc, née Goguen died Saturday, July 14th, 2007 at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital, Moncton, at the age of 92. Born in Grande-Digue, N.B., she was the daughter of the late Philippe Goguen and Elida Richard. Hortense was also the great-great-granddaughter of Joseph (Gueguen), a soldier who fought beside Montcalm on the Plains of Abraham and who later played a major role in re-establishing the Acadian people after the "1755 Expulsion", especially in New Brunswick. Hortense was born into this ongoing history on June 21st, 1915. At a very young age, she took on the difficult job of motherhood to her several siblings, necessitated by her mother's early demise. In time, she eventually met her first husband, Stanley Mills, with whom the union produced five children, Muriel Legere (Cyril) of Bedford, N.S., Roger Mills (Eileen) of Vancouver, B.C., Paul (deceased), Sally Pettigrew (Robert) of Shediac, N.B. and Beverly Arsenault (Robert) of Shediac River, N.B. Because of Hortense's deep understanding of family hardships, there was never any hesitation during her long life in wanting to help others and this was genuinely displayed when the family embraced two other young children who were raised with equal love along with their own, these being Theresa, her sister and Aldie, her nephew. During Hortense's declining years, she had special memories of having held the position of governess for one of New Brunswick's premiers and similar functions for other professional households. Hortense's biggest regret always remained the loss of her mother whom she had nursed tirelessly for years; this void clung to her until her own recent death. Because of this loss, she adopted "St. Anne" as her spiritual mother and to whom she prayed daily. For those who were fortunate enough to have known this remarkable woman, they will remember that ready smile and welcoming manner, for others it will be her zest for life and yet for others, it will be the grace and style she carried as a lady; but most of all, she will be missed as a caring, loving mother to all her children; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She was also a devoted wife to her second husband, Camille LeBlanc. Hortense is also survived by Theresa Nowe (Edward) of Halifax, N.S., Mills (Adele) of Souris, P.E.I.; a brother, Adelard Goguen (Irene) of Cocagne, N.B. Besides her husbands, she is also predeceased by her two sisters, Elizabeth "Liza" and Geneva; and two brothers, Gerard and Aurèle.
