61, River Bennett John Graham MacInnes, 61, of River Bennett, Victoria County, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at home in River Bennett. Born in Breton Cove, June 19, 1947, he was the son of the late Johnny and Mary (Smith) MacInnes. John Graham began his teaching career at what is now Baddeck Academy in 1969. His career as a teacher spanned 34 years including terms as executive director of the Learning Centre in Sydney Mines and as an elementary school teacher at the North Shore Consolidated Elementary School in his local community. First elected to Victoria County municipal council in October 1985, John Graham was acclaimed in every subsequent campaign thereafter for the next 23 years. During this period, he served as deputy warden in 1994, between 2002 and 2004 and again from 2006 to 2008. He was elected warden of Victoria County in 1997 and held that position until 2000. John was very active in his community serving as clerk of session at St. Ann's Bay United Church; as a member of the North Shore and District Volunteer Fire Department and as an early member of the amateur drama troupe, the St. Ann's Bay Players. In recognition of his community service, John was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2002. In addition to his community activities, John Graham was an avid gardener and hobby farmer, a lifelong fan of his beloved Montreal Canadiens and an active member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. As an educator at the elementary, junior and senior levels for decades and as a municipal councillor and community volunteer, John Graham, as he was affectionately known, touched a great many people in Victoria County. He will be sorely missed by his former students, constituents, family, friends, colleagues and his pets, Simba, Lizzie and Sandy. He is survived by his wife, the former Joan MacLeod and sons, Christopher Daniel, River Bennett, and John Kenneth (Tianna), Ottawa; brothers, Lloyd (Heather), Breton Cove, Merrill (Minerva), Breton Cove; sisters, Cathy (Ulrich Nikolai), Breton Cove, and Annmarie MacInnes (Sydney Hughes), Halifax. In addition to his immediate family, John Graham is survived by nieces, Megan MacInnes, Englishtown, Erika Nikolai, Toronto, Kate Nikolai, Tokyo, Amy MacInnes, North River, and Jenessa MacInnis, Fort McMurray. He is also survived by nephew, Lloyd Michael MacInnes, Little River; and grandniece, Lila Rose Donovan Nikolai, Toronto. The remains are resting at St. Ann's Bay United Church with visitation from 2-5 p.m. and again from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6. The funeral will be held at St. Ann's Bay United Church, Friday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. with Dianne Kempt, DLM officiating. Burial will be in Pinehill Cemetery, River Bennett. Family flowers only by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Shore and District Volunteer Fire Department - First Responders Unit. Arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
