90, Glace Bay It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Douglas Wilson, 90, on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at the Glace Bay General Hospital, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Dougie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born in Dominion, June 1, 1918, he was the son of the late William George and Ethel (Coffin) Wilson. Doug grew up in Dominion and worked for many years in the automobile industry at Hyland Motors, Bay Motors and Bay Chev. He was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay and also a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas from March 1942 to January 1946. Doug served in the liberation of Holland and the Battle of the Bulge and was also a member of the RCL, Branch No. 3, Glace Bay. He loved spending time in Florida and at his summer home of 50 years in Hillside, Mira. Other hobbies included fishing, hunting and going to watch his favourite hockey team, the Screaming Eagles. Doug is survived by his best friend and wife of 62 years, the former Margaret Lyons; sons, Robert (Rhonda) and Donald (Karen). He is survived by one sister, Polly Wynn; five grandchildren, Robin (Chris) Barrett, Beth (Darrell) MacMullin, Natasha (Ernie) Dalton, Dustin and Tatum Wilson and five great-grandchildren, Emma and Zackary Barrett, Duncan MacMullin, Lara and Kael Dalton. Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his brothers, George and Bob, sisters, Rhoda, Clara, Vivian and Lois. Visitation will take place Friday, Nov. 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Vernon Reid is Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay. Interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dougie may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care or the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences to the family can also be sent through the funeral home website www.vjmcgillivray.ca. Members of the RCL Branch No. 3, Glace Bay, will hold an honour guard at the entrance of the church to greet the funeral procession.
