Rev. Dr. George Laidlaw McNeill

Rev. Dr. George Laidlaw McNeill Rev. Dr. George Laidlaw McNeill, 92, Bedford, died peacefully June 9, 2008. He was born and educated in Edinburgh, Scotland. Following school, he worked for five years as a railway clerk before obtaining an MA from Edinburgh University and studying theology at the Baptist Theological College of Scotland and London University. After serving pastorates in Selkirk and Kelso in the Scottish Borders, he volunteered for chaplaincy service with the British Army during the Second World War. He participated in the D-Day landings, the liberation of Arnheim and he served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. In 1946, he left the army to minister in Thornaby Baptist Church, Yorkshire. From 1950-58, he pastored Cambuslang Baptist, Scotland, before immigrating to Canada at the call of Bedford Baptist Church. In 1968, he became Senior Minister of First Baptist Church in Moncton until 1979 when he returned to the Bedford church. He retired at the age of 70 in 1985 and was then honoured as Minister Emeritus in Bedford. During his ministry in Canada, he completed a Master of Divinity at Acadia University. He served as Chairman of the Board at that Divinity College as well as on the Board of Governors at the university. Subsequently, Acadia honoured him with a Doctor of Divinity. Dr. McNeill also served extensively on Baptist Boards of Association, Convention and Federation. Two of his greatest pleasures were chairing the establishment of the Atlantic Baptist Senior Citizens homes and serving as President of the Atlantic Baptist Convention. George was predeceased by his sweetheart, Margaret after 63 wonderful years. He is survived by sons, Alistair (Linda), Allan (Sheila) and Robert (Ann Marie); grandchildren, Christian, George, Margaret, Ian and Cameron; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kathleen, Abigail and Rebecca. The family will receive visitors in Bedford Baptist Church on Thursday, June 12 from 7 to 9:30 pm. There will be a private interment. A memorial service will be held in Bedford Baptist Church on Friday, June 13 at 2 pm. Memorial gifts can be allocated to the George and Margaret McNeill Bursary Endowment Fund (designed to provide aid for those studying for the ministry) or a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to T.K. Barnard Funeral Home.
