71, Halifax David F. Smith, 71, Halifax, passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, in the VG Site, Halifax. He was the second son of the late Frank and Ivena (Weir) Smith. He was predeceased by a brother, Paul in infancy. Raised on the family farm in Stanley, Hants County, David attended the local community school and then travelled by train to Windsor to complete high school. For a number of years he worked for the Royal Bank, employed in Windsor, Halifax, Baddeck and Sydney. Returning to Halifax, he was employed by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Bedford and Irving Construction, Halifax. In the mid-70s David owned and managed Hobby World, Mic Mac Mall, Dartmouth. Retiring in 1994, he was then free to indulge himself in his lifelong passion, remote control model airplanes. A member of the Halifax Radio Control Club as well as associate clubs through out the province, he spent countless hours at the Beaver Bank Flying Field, building planes at home, reading associated publications, researching on his computer, taking photos and checking the weather in the hope that it would be a great day to go out to the field. David built his last plane in the fall of 2007 which unfortunately he did not have the chance to fly. He was also a baseball and hockey fan having played both in his youth, a love of reading and music provided hours of relaxation. Those who knew him best will always remember his love of strawberry shortcake and apple pie. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Theresa (Tess Cuthbertson) Smith; mother-in-law, Mary W. (Batherson) MacDonald, Halifax; sisters, Betty (Jim) Mumford, Stanley, Hants County, and their daughters, Natalie (Alex Stevenson) and son Gavin, Dartmouth; Jennifer (Clinton) MacPhee and daughter, Jillian, Upper Rawdon; Judith Dixon and her sons, Keith, Kenny, Benjamin and their families, Ontario; sister-in-law, Mary Lou (Barry) White and their sons, Jamie (Marzena) and their children, Emily, Nathan and Joshua, Ottawa; Christopher (Crystal), Dartmouth; many special cousins, friends and neighbours, especially Yvon and Kay (Brown) Au Coin. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, immediately followed by a celebration of life service at 2 p.m. in Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Chapel, Rev. Karen Ettinger officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home's Elmcroft Reception Centre. Private family interment will be held in St. Stephen's Anglican Cemetery, Stanley.
