Barbara (Starzyczny) Poulain

98, New Waterford Barbara Poulain, 98, of the Maple Hill Manor and formerly of 552 St. Joseph St., New Waterford, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at the manor. For 15 years, prior to moving to the manor, she resided with her niece, Elizabeth and nephew, James. Born in Czech Republic, she was a daughter of the late Alois and Helena (Walsh) Starzyczny. Barbara was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church. She immigrated to Cape Breton from the Czech Republic in 1912 at the age of three. She ran her own grocery store on St. Joseph Street in New Waterford for over 40 years. Barbara was very active and independent and lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, cooking, knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Barbara also loved to play the accordion. Surviving are step-daughter, Marian Melski; stepsons, John (Mildred) Poulain and Charlie Poulain, all of New Glasgow; several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Barbara was predeceased by her first husband, Freddy Duprey; second husband, George Poulain; four brothers, Charles Starzyczny, Theodore Starr, Leo and Ottokar, stepmother, Julia. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass to celebrate Barbara's life will take place Friday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or the Maple Hill Manor.
